When broadband or high speed internet first came on the scene several years ago, Most people, eager to have quicker access to the internet rushed to sign up for the digital subscribe line or DSL, that they could get over their existing phone lines. However, with more and more people choosing to dispose of their land lines in favor of cell phones, many people are searching for new ways to have access to high speed Internet.
Luckily for them, there are many options available.
Cable Modem
For those who have cable television it is possible to get high speed internet via your cable company if they offer cable service. Cable modem speeds are comparable to the DSL speeds over telephone lines but, these speeds are becoming increasing faster each year. There are both pluses and negatives to using cable modem broadband.
On the plus side, if you have cable and your cable company offers high speed internet, you can get your internet through the already existing cable lines making it possible for you to get hooked up to the internet faster than having to have lines or satellites installed. However, on the negative side if you have problems with your cable television due to heavy usage, sunspots, or frequent weather conditions this may affect your internet as well.
Getting high speed Internet over your cable lines will allow you to use both your computer and watch your cable television at the same time. Check with your cable provider to see if getting cable modem is an option in your area. Be sure to check for price and special package deals.
High Speed Internet Via Satellite
Many people are choosing to get their high speed internet, via satellite. There are some distinct advantages to using satellite internet services. The biggest advantage is that many times, you can get high speed internet via satellite in areas where otherwise Internet services would be difficult to come by. High speed internet by satellite is faster than the old dial up phone internet services but, is often slower than either DSL or cable modem. Unless you already have a satellite for television viewing, it can also be extremely expensive, especially in initial set up costs.
In order to get high speed internet via satellite, you will need a 3 foot dish or base station, a satellite internet modem and must have a clear line of sight to the provider’s satellite. For those of you who have satellite already installed in your home and have few options for getting high speed internet, this may be one way to get it. Check with your satellite company see if they offer high speed internet and if they have special deals available, if you combine your satellite television and high speed internet in a package deal.
Wireless High Speed Internet
Wireless high speed internet is a growing business and offers many options. Fixed wireless internet such as WiFi is becoming popular in hotels, motels, restaurants, coffee shops, and libraries. However, using services such as WiFi will only give you limited Internet access as you must be in the immediate area of service.
For those wanting high speed wireless internet service in their home, WiMax can often be set up, even in remote areas, requiring the use of an antenna placed in a window to get service. WiMax may limit you to a certain area of your home when using the Internet but, it can provide services to remote areas. There are also wireless services available to be used with your cell phone. These services require a special card and a built in antenna.
Broadband Over Power Lines
One of the newest technologies for bringing you high speed internet is using low and medium voltage electrical power lines to access the Internet. While this technology is extremely limited at this point, it’s development could ensure that anyone who has a computer could have access to high speed Internet as power lines run absolutely anywhere.
No longer do you need to have a land line telephone to have access to high speed Internet. With all of the options available your choices are limited only by your budget and the availability of certain types of broadband to the area in which you live.
